ALAN
The sound of the future, as imagined in the late 1960s. This is an album with a lot of retro appeal, but also real musical invention and plenty of humour. Many of the tracks are covers of 60s hits that already had a hint of classical ambition about them - "A Lover's Concerto", itself adapted from Bach, is transformed into proto-synthpop, "Moon River" becomes an eerie futuristic soundscape, and "Strangers In The Night" turns into an hilarious mass of goofy sound effects. Oh, and is that the sound of scratching, several years before DJ Kool Herc? You know, I rather think it is. Best of all are the utterly demented Perrey/Kingsley originals which open each side, "The Savers" could be (and someday probably will be) the theme to a madcap TV comedy show, while "Baroque Hoedown", later expanded into Disneyworld's famous "Main Street Electrical Parade", sees the electronic pioneers let rip with the most grin-inducing - and just plain daft - instrumental imaginable. If only the future really had been like this...
