The cover: three males in evil black metal corpsepaint holding knives and making occult hand gestures in front of a tomb, all washed with a morbid red light. The back cover shows the same three males holding a woman's arms above her head. All four people are shirtless. They are standing in the snow, which is still keeping with the aesthetics of black metal. But one guy is wearing sneakers and jogging pants, neither of which are part of the black metal dress code. This is the reason I kept putting this EP at the bottom of the review pile. I could never get in the mood for funny black metal. Now, this record is back on the top of the pile. Let's see....When the needle hits the wax, the sounds that emanated from my speakers were not the distorted screamings of endless blasphemy. It was Oi/RAC: simple verse/chorus/verse structures, easy arrangements, easy playing, simple lyrics. This was certainly not what I was expecting, going by the cover alone. Both bands appear to share members - they might even have the same members, this release doesn't make that clear. First up is Marching On, hailing from Westchester County, NY. Their first two tracks sound clear. The singer has a hoarse, bass croak. The guitar is distorted and metallic, but the playing is in a very competent punk style. The rhythm section is audible and solid. Lyrically, the songs touch on unrepetant individualism and the regrets of the past. The last track, Roasting Mongrel Babies Over A Pagan Fire While Dancing Naked Under A Pale Westchester Moon, is a fuzzy instrumental. The guitar is buried under glistening distortion making the bass more prominent. The drums are weak double-bass clicks. The Kick To Kill side is very different, primarily in the lyrics. The first track, String 'Em Up, mentions "get ready for hanging niggers" in the first verse, which really lets one know where this band stands on racial matters. The next song addresses the band's desire to bring America back to it's dominace by "proud white Americans". They will do this by destroying all "traitors, nigger-lovin' true collaborators" and they will "kill all the Jews". There is even a "Sieg Heil" before the lead break that finishes the song. The final track is an almost instrumental consisting of mumbling vocals and black metal poserdom. It was recorded live, and thus the sound quality suffers.Musically, this split EP contains a few tracks of competent, modern Oi. Lyrically, Kick To Kill are violent racists (or just guilty of using violent, racist rhetoric) who would like to see the USA brought back to some mythical past where non-whites knew their place. Both bands contribute throwaway instrumental tracks with ironic black metal titles.
