Justin Sane is no stranger to playing acoustic, and I’ve enjoyed some of his solo stuff. For the release of Anti-Flag’s most recent full-length American Spring, Justin and Chris #2 played an acoustic show in a record store and recorded this LP in the process. I picked it up in the rush to buy some Record Store Day 2016 releases from banquetrecords.com, despite probably having listened to enough live Anti-Flag material. The quality of the recording and the performance are both excellent for a live record, and accompanied by just the right amount of crowd participation. Changes from the studio versions of these songs are interesting enough to warrant a listen. Older songs ‘Turncoat’ and ‘Die For The Government’ are on here, but despite their familiarity they seem weaker than the more recently penned tracks. I streamed American Spring when it came out but I didn’t exactly get hooked on it. This LP gave 3 of the tracks a second chance with me, and I think I’ll go and have another listen to the album as a result.Of course, there’s the obligatory Anti-Flag socialist sermon. And why not? Justin Sane is a good orator and talks sense. Though someone involved in the recording might disagree, as the end of side A seems to cut Justin off mid-sentence.
