In 1997, I saw this brand-new CD in the secondhand bin, offered for nearly full price. I'm a huge fan of the Akin's earlier music and his record label, so I plunked down the cash without listening first. I got the disc home, put it on, and a few seconds in, I began to feel like perhaps I really need to not make impulse buys like that anymore. Most of the tracks are squarely in the "noise" genre, which I admit I wasn't quite prepared for, despite several years of appreciating "cold" ambient/drone-type music. This CD is not droney. Nothing could make it warm. It's more like "something has gone terribly wrong with all the electronic devices in your house, and they're all now announcing their displeasure through your stereo, all at once."I popped it onto the sell pile, where it remained untouched for a good 15 years. My "sell pile" is the physical manifestation of one of my delusions; it's a shelf from which nothing has ever actually been sold, and as of March 2013 it has become a "rip it just in case" pile.Going through and archiving this material has, perhaps not entirely unpredictably, resulted in me listening to things I thought I'd never want to hear again, and deciding that I do in fact like them, and want to keep them, and hear them on occasion. And lo and behold, there are several tracks on No02 that I think are just dandy, in their gritty, bleepy, mangled fax-modem splendor.Art is just messy sometimes, and it takes me a while to catch up with it.
