Really well said man, pretty much the same for me. Every time I play the Aquarius record someone will turn up with a smile, paper and pen - What the F*@# is that record ??? Big time grooving on the B side as well with the Claudja Barry cut , but still don't get it what the kraftver is doing as a fill in the record? An excellent release from Todd Terje on his own disco inspired Supreme records. All three re-working’s here are really, really good with each hitting their respective marks, albeit with slightly varying degrees of success. Home Computer is the weakest of the three mixes though only because of a lack of deviation from the Kraftwerk original. Although, having said that, it still sounds good. I’ve not heard the original of Claudja Barry’s ‘Dance, Dance, Dance’ but from hearing this I would imagine that it must have been a fairly large disco number in it’s time. Terje’s input here is pretty apparent although he’s left enough of the original in place to satisfy the purists but brushed up the proceedings with some deft knob-twiddling, which serves to liven everything up and brings some of the better analogue elements to the fore, the result of which is a strong vocal/guitar led piece of funky dance floor grooviness of ass kicking proportions. Cool as. However, there’s still more. By far the best of the bunch (head and shoulders in fact) is Terje’s superb piano-funk driven re-working of George Shearing’s 1960’s hippy classic ‘Aquarius’. It took me a while to realise that this was in fact the very same track such is the brilliance of Terje’s make-over. In case you need reminding, the original contains the line ‘this is the dawning of the age of Aquarius’ amongst other things, which as I remember it in some 60’s movie in which it was used, was followed by lots of naked hippies leaping about in a field which was full of lambs and flowers. Suffice to say, Terje’s remake does not conjure up such flaky imagery. What it does do however, is build slowly with a nice drum loop over the opening 8 bars before then introducing a really nice and punchy rolling bass line for about another 8 before then launching into the main thrust of the track which contains a really good jazzy, funky (call it what you like) free flowing piano track, all the while bongo’s and guitars noodle away in the background, all in tandem and all in perfect synchronicity. This may be a little ‘too’ analogue and jazzy for some but for me it’s simply contemporary musical perfection. Obtain without question.
