Rivik
The matching of Antipop and Matthew Shipp seems like an odd choice at first, but with close listening, it makes alot of sense. Antipop, the kings of experimenting with beats and subject matter, are responsible for the post manipulation of Shipp and his band. Shipp is widely known for working with the leading artists of various areas of experimentation and jazz. Some tracks allow Shipp's odd melodic lines to be the commanding presence, while others are chopped heavily by Antipop's mastery in the studio. The results are undeniably unique and interesting. Most tracks fall between the spectrum of free jazz, bop, soul jazz, and/or experimental hip hop. Failing to interest are the tracks that are too caught up in the process of experimentation, but this is to be expected with a spectrum as diverse as the one found here. Recommended if you like jazz, hip hop, or music that tries - and succeeds - at doing something new. 4/5
