huckman
The late nineties saw an influx of boy and girl bands come out of the woodworks. All as generic as each other, with pretty boys singing and prancing around like idiots, singing about girls and love and all sorts of things they couldn’t really comprehend properly at their age (although they all seemed so grown up and mature to ten year-old me). Five were one of those bands, created to be the male equivalent to the Spice Girls. To be fair though, Five had some pretty big hits back in the day that, even now, are pretty catchy, and certainly great for nostalgia (they were awesome when I saw them in 2014... a 27 year-old rocker... I felt right at home). All five members of, uh... Five, fit the package. They were good looking, could dance, could sing (possibly) and were full of youthful enthusiasm. The music itself is typical of pop from that era, and when the album is just over an hour long, you know damn well there’s going to be tonnes of filler material. But for the most part, this is harmless stuff. Most of the songs are pretty upbeat and have some decent melodies and a driving bass line. Hit singles ‘Everybody Get Up’, ‘Got the Feelin’, ‘Slam Dunk Da Funk’ and ‘When the Lights Go Out’ were all staples of my childhood prior to becoming the rocker I am today, and throwaway songs such as ‘Cold Sweat’ and ‘Partyline 555-On-Line’ are actually pretty catchy. Overall, this is a pretty generic, though innocent pop album. You know what you’re getting with this kind of music, so best to go in with low expectations. The only real detriment to the record is the duration. There are so many songs that could have closed the album but instead it keeps having to squeeze in that one last song, giving it as many endings as ‘The Return of the King’. Either way, it’s a fun, harmless slab of nostalgia, so that’s good enough for me.
