Anyone who's seen the book edition of "The Crack In The Cosmic Egg" will know that this album came as a big surprise to us, as we apologised for the "not very good start" to Encyclopedia, and scarcely do we believe the hype about certain albums. The Abacus debut LP has a lovely stoned psychedelic feel to it, a rich classical spiced sound, and the distinctive voice/lyrical style of Chris Williams, with hints of Frumpy (instrumentally, not the vocals at all!), Epitaph and Wallenstein. The Wallenstein touch is mostly MOTHER UNIVERSE era, with that quirky mix of Canterbury or Supersister "isms", although instrumentally it's all distinctly Krautrock, and a record full of surprises.
