This 12" is either one of the coolest Rolling Stones anomalies or utter crap, depending on who you ask. I happen to love it, although I admit being shocked when I heard it. On the one hand, it's one of the sloppiest 12" mixes I've ever heard, with a few wobbly tempo issues and one or two moments where multiple percussion loops are playing and the beats don't match. But the production starts to take on a life of its own, it has a strange atmosphere that works so well with the song, I like it even better than the album version. Plus the additional production was done in the days when you created these kinds of things on a reel to reel setup using a razor blade and a roll of splicing tape. When you really pay attention to how many edits this track must have required, it's quite simply amazing work. I also love that they threw samples from the New York Dolls "Stranded in the Jungle" into a Rolling Stones remix.

Usually I'm very cautious about dance remixes of rock songs. But "Too Much Blood (Dance Version)" is more than a commissioned composition, it is one of Arthur Baker masterpieces ! This psychedelic rework shows what INNOVATIVE dance music is or should be : it sounds new, fresh, destabilizing. Funky bassline, great Mick Jagger vocal samples, and an experimental approach. And don't forget the traditional Latin Rascals beats bursts and editing ...
