I cleaned my copy and it looks very clean (was brand new when I bought it), I keep my stylus clean, etc, but this record (particularly Side B) produces a lot of pops and surface noise, which I honestly almost never hear on any other record I own, so I found that very curious about this release. I will try cleaning it again, but I dunno...
Rexfire
Might have been a repress. I've noticed the same issue on some of MOV's represses. The first run of any given pressing from MOV (from my experience) has been fine. Secondary pressings run into some quality control issues. I'm sure it still sounds lightyears better than the Plain reissue. You won't find a copy of this particular album better than this unfortunately.
Peras
This pressing sucks. It is good to see that I'm not alone in having this opinion though.
Malojurus
I think PUNK & THRASH should also be in the description of the music. But that is just MY opinion.
Hurus
And here it is, Mr. Bungle's final swansong to their already multifaceted and eccentric sound. Unlike Disco Volante which was a very erractic release from the Bungle camp, each song here is a well polished masterpiece. Where i've found the 2 other albums a little difficult to make all the way through these days, California remains a none stop ride of thrills. and the genres flipped effortlessly on this album is a real treat: surf, death metal, lounge, pop, balkan, doo wop... sometimes in the same song. Whether it is the simply perfect "retrovertigo", The gangster brass band metal sounding "none of them knew they where robots" the sad and relaxing "Pink Cigarette" or the videogame jazz funk of "Golem II.." there's plenty of great tracks here. As a experiment i used to listen to this album in the dark with headphones on. Its quite the experience as you never know what will happen next. an essential Patton project release. 5/5.

Excellent sounding vinyl! Very dynamic unlike the plain pressing. Great job MOV!
generation of new
When I first bought this album on CD when it came out, I instantly fell in love with it. By the time it was over, it was already set in stone that it was my favorite album put out by any project involving Mike Patton. Listening to that CD I don't know how many times, I was never able to fully experience that feeling again... that is until I bought this MOV pressing. I have fallen in love with this album all over again. This is the first pressing I've gotten from MOV, I was hesitant because people have told me bad things about them, but if this is the kind of pressings they put out then I will definitely be keeping my eye out for more from them!
Gamba
While Mike Patton doesn't release band-official vinyl reissues soon, MOV is the way to go for Mr. Bungle. I don't doubt this one also used digital files to cut the master (this album was recorded full-analog), but it sounds pretty damn good if you ask me.
Hasirri
This pressing is solid. Nothing worth stressing about if you love this album as much as I do and just want a copy that wasn't pressed with a potato.
Matty
Those band-official reissues are taking too long...
Ariseym
DO NOT buy this pressing from Plain Recordings... Just as other users have said, an amazing album but the sound is just terrible. Huge let down... Unluckily, I blindly bought their 3 releases under this pressing, and the 3 are just as bad, no wonder they were cheap. If you just want to have an object that spins... Buy this. But if you are here for the music, stay with the CD's or older pressings!
Brick my own
Horrible sounding reissue..buyer beware!
Perdana
How's the sound on this copy? I know the earlier press sucked.
Delirium
I got this one as a gift. I've never heard the infamous Plain Recordings version, but I think this version sounds great! The sticker boasts 180 gram audiophile pressing etc. There are no lyrics included, but overall the record is of satisfying quality in my opinion.
Mardin
Didn't have any complaints as far as sound quality on my copy like some of the other reviews. The packaging is rather basic and lacking though.

Mike Patton announced "band authorized" Mr. Bungle vinyl reissues coming in 2015. https://www.facebook.com/mikepatton/posts/10152613995101103

finally California has been given justice!Throw away that piece of crap Plain Recordings released (or should sell it back to em!). MOV have absolutely killed it - it's awesome - excellent energy, it actually has dynamic now, the highs & lows are beautiful with great separation - so happy! The art on the insert is still pretty crap - looks blown up from the cd, but my only criticism.Go buy it. GO!

Wrong comment to different release. You meant Disco Volante release by Plain !
Thorgahuginn
Noticed there's no Platypus in the tracklisting for DV. Gutted! No mention of the hidden groove track either (nice if it's on there). The Bends as a bonus one sided 12" with an etched b-side would have been awesome. Messing with the original flow, but I'd have dug it. Happily listen to The Bends over and over.I'll probably still get this, but the lack of Platypus (even if it were on a single) bugs me.

Music On Vinyl is also releasing Disco Volante on Crystal Clear Vinyl. Check the New On Vinyl web site. I just ordered mine today and after the Euro to Dollar conversion it came out to $38. Not too bad for shipping a record from the Netherlands to the United States. When I got my copy of California it was number 065 too so they get some very low numbers. There is also a video that shows how they pack their records. Thankfully they remove the vinyl from the outer sleeve. Top notch service for MOV releases.
Faezahn
Yup! Just gave my copy a spin, and it sounds great!
Visonima
This pressing sounds really great. It's gives all the subtlety and depth of sound that is the reason you buy vinyl. For me the mix is a little middle heavy but that could just be my system tbh. The vinyl itself has a grey splash like mark embedded in it. It does not effect the sound and on contacting a supplier he said most of the ones he had been shipped had this defect. I don't mind to be honest, but a bit of quality control wouldn't have gone amiss. If you like mr bungle just buy it, it's amazing :D
Conjulhala
I love this album so much. Bought this record, returned it the next day .. One of the greatest dissapointments of my life .. Terrible sound quality, groove-distortion, vinyl imperfections audible, low res artwork .. Everything that could possibly be wrong with this recording has been messed up .. Don't buy this..

Plain Recordings SUKKS ....
Rich Vulture
They made the best album of all times and then they quit...Mr. Bungle has been a favorite of mine ever since I first heard their self-titled album in a record store somewhere in Holland, trying it out over the headphones. And they came a long way, from a lot of crude playing with styles (still leaning a lot on metal though) and blunt humor to culminating in a perfect blend of even more and various styles and more subtle humor that is called 'California'.Of course, the first link to Mr. Bungle was via Mike Patton (Faith No More), but it's not like this is 'just' a solo project of his. All members contribute massively to this summum of musical adventure, which never seems to lose its depths, humor, brilliance and what other superlatives have you...Reminiscent of The Beach Boys, rockabilly, metal, middle-eastern music and much, much more, this album is a bold alternative shortcut to the secret and ancient ways of attaining musical nirvana. Come on, give it a listen, especially if you're into Lady Gaga or Garth Brooks!

As far as I can tell, Plain Recordings are only really good at making expensive and inefficient frisbees. Don't buy anything from Plain Recordings if music is what you're after.
Shomeshet
I have to ask: is it a low volume issue with you guys or what? I ask because with my turntables, this isn't an issue since I can simply turn up the master volume on the mixer which has an absurdly high maximum volume anyway. In any event, I compared the CD copy I already own to the vinyl after reading the reviews on here and the vinyl is genuinely an improvement in sound quality. Maybe my ears are retarded or something but that's my honest opinion!
Bragis
Low volume on an LP raises the noise floor considerably. If there are contaminants present (which there obviously are in cheap vinyl) they will be that much louder when you crank the volume, often overpowering the music. There are optimum db levels and playing times for LPs, under 20 minutes per side at 33.3 rpms, and something like 12 minutes on 45 rpm.
Puchock
yep, and another one - I usually dont do this, but ya gotta warn people about crap like this. Plain should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. This pressing is pretty much good for nothing apart from saying that you have California on vinyl. There is no way on Earth i will get anything with their name related to it again - feel like snapping it in half!Low volume, shit sound, blurry jpg artwork - this one's got it all!
Fordregelv
Agreed. This pressing is terrible. Most Plain reissues have been pretty subpar, but this one is by far the worst. I waited 11 years for this masterpiece to come out on vinyl, and this was a huge letdown. My 128kbps AAC file of California sounds better than this coaster. The insert artwork was obviously blown up from a CD cover, and the "master" probably came from the same source! Plain has no website and there is zero information about them online. They are sketchy at best. I wish Rhino or Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs would have released California. 180 gram pressings of digitally sourced recordings are a joke. Especially when they cram more than 50 minutes of music onto one disc!
