Ascending from the fires of not only Dr. Feelgood, but back from death’s door, Wilko Johnson is not only blowing our minds, but his own as well, as this album was never supposed to have happened. To that end, don’t be surprised that Blow Your Mind is a ridiculous raucous shout out for the intensity of both life and mortality.Musically Wilko has changed little, yet that being said, there’s something warm and fuzzy about a consistent career as long as his, still standing tall while delivering dirty raw high octane blues laden rock … exactly what he set out to do so many years ago. While most people facing down terminal cancer would retreat to the comforts of feeling sorry for themselves, Wilko embarked on an ‘actual’ farewell tour while recording the album with the lead sing of The Who, Roger Daltry, intent on not only going out in style, but with a bang of intensity the world would not soon forget. But the Devil was not going to get his due here, as late stage cancer surgery opened a door that was nearly closed, leaving Johnson with many additional years on his hands to regale us with his incendiary guitar prowess. Make no mistake about it, Blow Your Mind is all about the ticking of time, anxiety and an ascending darkness, but Wilko does it with the electric hands of inspiration, backed by his longtime mates Dylan Howe on drums and Norman Watt-Roy holding down those essential bass-lines, where they rock roll cavort and dance back the shadows on the wall, embracing the true spirit of the boogie woogie lifestyle … letting the good times roll until the very end, which happily now, will not be for a very long long time.Review by Jenell Kesler
