Sagda
The first time I listened to a Steve Howe solo album was many years ago. I liked it for the most part. I still think that Steve Howe should not be singing. The man simply cannot hold a tune. His guitar work on the majority of his solo albums-the existence of which has no doubt taken away from what he could have been contributing to either a Yes effort or an Asia effort-comes off as passable but not brilliant. He is capable of brilliant guitar work. Most guitarist are in one band at a time-the fact that Steve Howe has been in four projects (He was also in 'GTR' with Steve Hackett in the mid 1980's) takes away from the impact of each separate respective project. That factor plays a major role in a) Yes's recent original material not being particularly amazing or particularly musical, and b) Asia's recent material not being equal to the bands first album, not to mention c) Steve Howe's solo material sounds often half finished. Most music fans shy away from saying things like that-for reasons I don't understand. Nobody can do three jobs well (never mind four) and that is what Steve Howe has been trying to do for something like 30 years. This results is a 'take it or leave it' retrospective of material that was made-it seems-with a 'take it or leave it attitude' by a guitarist that was celebrated as "rocks best guitar player" for several years in a row in the 1970's. Some people will like the retrospective out of a sense of 'loyalty' to Steve Howe's legacy as one of rocks best guitarists. I think Steve Howe should have picked one band to focus on and then maybe do just one solo album-like Chris Squire's 'Fish Out of Water': and then call it a day.
