TheFresh
The 1986 release of SPK’s Zamia Lehmanni - Songs Of Byzantine Flowers led to years of immitators, picking up on the tropes of industrial noise loops combined with sacred and profane sounds drowning in mirky oceans of reverb. A far departure from Brian Eno’s ambient austery and modal fascinations, this was an approach to ambience that carried within it industrial music’s obsessions with prurient decay and surrealist mockery of western capitalist values. And just like the European surrealists with their colonialist fantasies, so too a certain cohort of ambient industrialists would assume the tropes of non-western instrumentation and tuning. Perhaps the most accomplished of the latter were O Yuki Conjugate from Nottingham. Here is the band’s third release and the beginnings of their detour through ethno-new age. Released in 1991, the album served as a refuge for goth dissidents at the time.
