Ximinon
this was a side project by Don Gordon, of Numb. He no longer makes music, and although Numb achieved some well deserved praise for thier brand of dense electro industrial (being one of the "big three" from vancouver back in the day, alongside Skinny Puppy and Frontline Assembly), they were never really at the forefront of the scene. This project, despite sharing a few sounds and ideas from the last couple of Numb albums, really has little to do with that project. It is a mixture of breaks, techno, and IDM. Of course, at the time this was released, it seemed everyone who was someone in the electro industrial world was releasing some kind of trash techno side project album, largely to try and cash in on the short live "electronica" craze, so what makes this any different? Well, for one, this record sounds like alot of care went into the design and sound of it. Melodies are dark, samples are well thought out, and despite relying on fairly well used breaks in some songs, they are treated enough to give them an original sound. Dark really is the operative word here, as this record layers on the atmosphere of all the musty corners of the world with a well thought our progression as the album churns on. it's a shame that this was marketed to elctro industrial people, as with the right label backing this up, it could have done quite well appealing to a more discerning crowd, and probably sold much better to boot. Of course, none of that really matters at this point, as a repress is highly unlikely, as is a digital release, so keep your eyes peeled at used shops and whatnot, because if you like the darker stuff of Locust and Reload's output, this should not dissappoint.
