I have this 12" but is misprinted with the labels and sleeve for ATCQ - Oh My God. Any info on this misprint?

Taken from the "Boomerang" soundtrack, this was a track A Tribe Called Quest released on the heels of the successful and ground-breaking album "The Low End Theory". Sadly, the more-than-adequate rhymes from Phife Dog and Q-Tip are held back by the lackluster backing track. Compared to anything on "The Low End Theory", "Hot Sex" feels vibeless and bland. It sounds like filler, which is further evident from the fact that the track's only 2:45 long. Surely Q and Phife could've written more lyrics if they'd actually cared about it, but they probably didn't want to waste good ones on a crappy soundtrack song when they should be saving 'em for the third album. It's possible that the "Boomerang" soundtrack didn't have enough obvious hits on it and the record company decided to make ATCQ's limp offering a single for lack of any better options? In any case, though this is one of the weakest Tribe efforts, it's still far better than a lot of other hip-hop of that era. As far as the other tracks on here, UK funk-soul act Young Disciples' "Young Nations Mix" of "Scenario" is truly great. Awesome horns, feels very tense with restrained jazz power, a hint of hidden depths under the surface. The "UK Hip Hop Remix" of "Butter" is jarringly non-Tribe sounding and unnecessary. Cartoonish.
Wat!?
I did rate it 4/5 and said the rhymes were good. The only thing lacking is in the beats and production...it's just not an interesting backing track, which you said yourself. I think it's funny when people click "disagree" because they think I'm hating on the single but then go on to agree with me. Besides, I like the single! I'm just saying it's Tribe's weakest single off the first three albums. It's still good stuff.

Just the one lyric of "Where Ya At?!" was a memorable moment for some reason. Deejay's would cut that up on the reg and it was even sampled later on. Phife Dog rips it on this and if you're a Tribe fan you would agree with that. Of course this beat was not of the highest "Low End Theory" caliber, but it was for a soundtrack and it was a party type banger and STILL dope. I guess depending on people's backgrounds and viewpoints, there will always be conflicting reviews about this record.Just the controversy surrounding Tip wearing the mask in the video is enough to make this a notable record. If you didn't already know, here's the two conflicting stories:Story 1: Teddy Riley and/or his Wreckx-n-Effect crew took offense at Phife's line, "strictly hardcore funk, not a new jack swing.." from "Jazz (We've Got)" off the Low End theory LP. Apparently, one of the one hit wonder garbage butt ass Wreckx clowns gave Q Tip an eye jammy in the midst of some kind of confrontation over the Phife line. Hence the reason for Tip donning the mask in the "Hot Sex" video.Story 2: Q Tip didn't want to do the video for Hot Sex. But the film's studio, Paramount, and Jive Records went behind Tribe's back and said they'd do the video. So Q Tip was giving them both a "masked" eff you by wearing the mask.Story one has been circulating for years and I've really only heard about story 2 from one source, so I extremely lean towards believing the first story.Anyways, not the greatest Tribe track but never the less a dope joint. If you're a DJ, rock it at a party where the age minimum is 30 and see the reaction you get.

Hot sex was a contraversial track from ATCQ, but still, quite groovy and set a sexy ambiance. Nice flows from Q as usual.
Hi_Jacker
Yeah, I guess we can all agree that it would definitely have been out of place and just not as good as everything else on LET and MM. Still a good joint though.
Efmprof
Yeah, the flows are tight, but I think the backing track is really, really boring. Especially compared to everything on "The Low End Theory" and "Midnight Marauders". Those three guys had the vibe and groove deep in their hip pockets on both those albums, and this track could never measure up in that department.
