Heard the majority of this album (must have been the clean version) at a bar tonight. I thought for sure I was listening to Christian rap. You know, like actual rap but musically a little bit off, a little too positive (even when trying so, so hard to sound angsty), and always coming up one idea short. How this ended up on Best of 2014 lists, I don't know, because musically it's about 20 years out of date, and not in an homage/retro way, but more of a clueless, this is what adults think the kids are into these days way.The lyrics are simplistic and shallow, I mean "put your hands in the air like you really do care"? Christ above. If they want people to care, they need to get a new producer, try changing up the vocal delivery so that it's not the exact same monotonous cadence on track after track, throw away any stanza which doesn't elicit an emotion or impress with cleverness (i.e. 98% of their lyrics), up the musical production value, and focus on releasing great EPs instead of lackluster albums.So if you want something that sounds like production music, a generic "urban" background for a student film, then here you go. If you are looking for quality alternative hip-hop with the slightest bit of cleverness, pass this by.
