To my ears this is Vic's "Hunky Dory" -- a collection of songs that hit the mark at every turn supported by brilliant backing musicians (Lambchop) and stellar production that keeps Vic's voice at the centerpiece of the table at all times. Every song tells a story and gives a picturesque vision all its own and yet they also manage to hang together effortlessly as a full length album. It's taken me many years of listening to all his albums over and over again but after all this time I think it is finally time that I proclaim The Salesman and Bernadette at the top of my list.
