Jay Denes, reviving his Naked Music guise with RECREATION, makes his way back into smooth house territory after the dodgy Blue Six album, AQUARIAN ANGEL. Well, mostly. Though "Pleasure Seeker" achieves the right mood, the slower beats of "This Time Around" and "Love Only One" again veer towards middling downtempo again. Denes seems to waver between these two poles, not always successfully, but when he hits it, he hits gold. "Hurry (Blue Six Dub)" has a slinky pulse to it that wouldn't have been out of place off BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW. Elsewhere, the saxophone that toots its way through "Heroin Chic" makes a reappearance on "Samba Contigo," though in slightly accelerated surroundings on the latter. Indeed, the second half of the album is markedly stronger than the first. The original "Hurry" has Catherine Russell's vocals in full force, while the delicate "Recreation" takes the album out on a gentle note. The album is like getting back into shape after not working out for a while: after a little bit of fatigue, it starts feeling good again.
