Asyasya
This mix is generally not typical of Steffi's live DJing (at least from my experience) which tends towards across-the-board classic (or classic-sounding) house and techno, going deep where deepness is required but not being unafraid to reel out the tried, the tested and the loved when judged right. This mix has a much narrower focus in comparison, being an hour-long steady-state exercise in broken rhythms with nary a 4/4 to ear, voluminous sub-bass and plangent chords that depending on the mood of the listener, could either be euphoric or melancholic. If you want a RA-friendly comparison, let's say there's a livity sound meets Carl Craig feel with a little IDM feel (specifically from Autchere's 'Amber.') The tunes are sourced in house from her own Dolly label, making it feel like a label showcase, with each track allowed to play out for the duration, not that fabricfirsters, accustomed to 30-track mixes should feel cheated by the mere 15 tracks here Steffi plays. The uniformity may disappoint those seeking a more peak-and-trough slalom round the history of house and techno, but when one is in the mood for this kind of music, it's narrow focus is most welcome. This album is a companion piece to her recent 'Waking States' album, and it is clear that Steffi, as she has done so in the past, has settled on particular deep-sounding niche for now, which while being at variance with her previous work, still maintains a certain continuity. As Steffi has matured into this sound, so may the listener, this mix requiring a couple of listens really at least, not just to merely appreciate, but actively enjoy. A grower, rather than a banger, though as the former is so much rarer than the latter, it represents a highlight amongst the fabric mix series for the year.
