Hi_Jacker
An amazing comp from Solid Smoke Records that displays the genius of Ollie McLaughlin, one of the most prolific producers and label owners in Detroit soul history, though he was based in Ann Arbor. The track selection here is superb, with deep soul cuts from Belita Woods, The Firestones (3) and The Compacts that would be extremely difficult, not to mention very expensive, to track down in the wild. It should be noted that the opening track, Barbara Lynn's 'Hello Stranger', is the most well know track here (as well as the easiest one to find an original copy of), but the sound quality on this cut is sub-par, taken from a very scratchy vinyl source. This is strange, since the other tracks sound fantastic! This, along with Detroit Gold Vol 2, are must-haves for fans of the Detroit soul sound!
