Jack
One of the most hyped Australian records in recent years. Phrases like “it’s not as good as it’s price tag” often get bandied about in conversations about this album. Five to ten years ago that was certainly true, but since the going rate has gone down a bit more recently, I’d say it’s on par with how good the record is. If you didn’t know this record and looked at the back cover, you’d be forgiven for guessing that it’s a country music session, since a lot of other releases on Eureka are. But this record is a great funky jazz session full of long sparse passages and a funky edge that makes it sought after by collectors the world over. ‘Fall Down Dead’ is the stand-out cut, with it’s slow break-beat intro and sax line complimented perfectly by Judy’s rhythmic piano accompaniment. ‘The Eleven-Eight Song’ is a mini-suite of different jazz styles with some great little funky parts and some soloing. ‘Colour of My Dream’ is a modal jazz cut with some scat vocals (aussiefunk.blogspot.com).
