If you like A Nice Way of Life, make no mistake that this single, also released on Egg, is required. This, from 1969 predates that LP, but what's really nice to know is the music is pretty much the same. Lots of that wonderful prog/psych vibe, with nice bass work from Bernard Paganotti (later a member of Magma) and organ work from Francois Breant (who'd later release two albums in the late '70s on Egg with Sons Optique and Voyeur Extra-Lucide). I really like the drumming on this, no wonder Patrick Jean replaced Christian Vander in this band (as we know where Vander went, to start Magma - there's no recordings of Cruciferius with Christian Vander, as there's false info out there that he actually appears on their recordings). "Music Town" pretty much demonstrates this is the same band that will deliver the album A Nice Way of Life. "Mister Magoo" is a bit amusing as it obviously refers to the cartoon character, has a rather jazzy feel, especially the piano playing. While most of the songs on A Nice Way of Life (except for "Big Bird" and "Gimme Some Lovin'", which are covers) were credited to the band members, on this single, "Music Town" was credited to Redtone and Wilder, and "Mister Magoo" by just Redstone. There seems to be little info who they were, perhaps friends of Franz Auffray, but not entirely sure, but given this early version of Egg label appeared to be Franz Auffray's label and his named seemed to pop up on every release on this early version of the label (which was just two LPs and about three or four singles). It's too bad these songs never made it onto A Nice Way of Life, neither do they appear as bonus tracks on the reissue of A Nice Way of Life on O-Music, making the purchase of this 7" essential.
