Painshade

Always thought this was a bit dodgy. The vocals are bland, the lyrics are sixth-grade nonsense and the song sounds like a Eurovision act trying to emulate Erasure's "A Little Respect" - and failing miserably. Yeuch. So, as you can imagine, when a friend of mine recently purchased a former DJ's collection which included two copies of this and tried to flog me one of them, it didn't exactly set my heart racing. "It's all about the B side", he exclaimed. And sure enough, he was right: "You Are" is indeed a pleasantly surprising song, with understated vocals, a subtle 303 line (!) and a keyboard arrangement that resembles Larry Heard (!!). It's not a forgotten deep house classic or anything like that, but it's a nice little song and a completely unexpected one at that. I love it when that happens.
