Ironfire
This curious release reverts the group name back to the very early days by calling the group 'The Pink Floyd' on the labels, though it is simply 'Pink Floyd' on the spine and inside the gatefold. Strangely this was never corrected on UK pressings right through to the 80s and 90s ! Though 'The' is used on other releases such as 'Meddle' from Spain where it is used both on the cover and labels ! Probably loads of other examples but ....why ?

With a decent 1G/1G UK first press I compared with my other 2016 Grundman reissue of the album.I used Side B to make things easy, mainly Fat Old Sun as I found it to be quite revealing with the micro dynamics and such.To spoil things a little Ill just say that this has for me been the first clear cut winner out of the Pink Floyd reissues Ive compared with originals so far, which include WYWH, Animals and Meddle. The UK most notably has the edge on subtle detail, at least when it comes to string instruments. The reissue seems to favor the vocals to be more present on Fat Old Sun while the original strikes a good balance, still being present, but un earthing more harmonics and presence to the guitar instead. On Summer 68 however the vocals are the ones to have an extra rasp and reverb to them without being any more sibilant than the reissue, something the UK Meddle suffered from.I thought the bass might be tighter on the original as well but I might be wrong there, its only a little for the most part if anything. The impact of drums are somewhat favored on the reissue, but its a small difference and one that might not even be superior. The UK already has a great balance to it and might not necessarily need any type of enhancements in that direction. In the end the original wins out this time, mostly for having some extra harmonic detail to certain aspects. The vinyl is quiet too if you can find a clean copy. Its not a landslide by any means, and Id probably prefer a clean reissue over a rough first press, but it is a little better from my quick comparison.Equipment Used:Rega RP1 with Nagaoka MP-200 Cartridge Cyrus 2 AmplifierSystem Fidelity SF-3050 Tower SpeakersCustom made HQ Speaker Cables

I agree with the rest about noise and the very loud pops and ticks.I was disappointed with this reissue as i have the dark side of the moon and wish you were here from the 2016's series which sound great!I think side A is worse and also the sound seems to be a little bit bassy.

This is the original press. . . . . .

Looking for anybody who can help/if they have SHVL 781 with the following runout - A= SHVL 781 A-4 PL 3 ; B= SHVL 781 B-5 AO 2 (the A could be an inverted V)

Hi, the copy I bought in the seventies when I was young has an Italian cover, 3C 062-04550, a German label, SHZE 297, Rights Society: BIEM, a German matrix number on side A, and an UK matrix number on side B, Matrix / Runout, Side A: SHZE 297 A//14349-4-Y, Side B: SHVL 781 B-2G. Has anyone heard about something like this? Thank you
watching to future
I'd go with the cover, I get the impression that in Italy they pressed the vinyl with what they got, and hey - they got a german A side and an english B side, and hurried to make some records. Seems like Germany and England helped out at the factory in Italy :)I have never been impressed by the quality of italian pressings.
salivan
I have a copy that is like the 1st US issue in every respect but has the title in the grass on the front cover. Matrix/runout saysSide A. SKAO-1-382-A-3; Side A. SKAO-2-382-A-3 (the “AO” on both sides looks like it was written over “ST”(?)). Gatefold, sky is blotchy, stero written on label (Harvest). Has anyone heard of this?
Whitestone
Love this album. One of their best, if not my fave. Don't understand the haters. Whack it on and close your eyes and pretend it's the seventies. Just wished they had put out a few more around this time.
Qumenalu
Agreed. It is because its orchestral I like it and certainly my favorite.Atom Heart Mother, Meddle and Obscured by Clouds are the pinnacle of Floyd to me while they were young and scrappy and before they started recording their more highly polished and successful albums.
Gavinrage
One has a copy here, German release, no LC on the label. 1 C 062-04 550Matrix is almost covered by label.Plain white inner, denoting N 20/75 (would this be the 20th week of 1975?) will do more research, if so, add to the db.
Ffrlel
Hi ! I just got a 1970 UK A2G B2G copy but these matrix do not appear in the 2nd UK press. Does anybody have an idea if it is well a 2nd UK press ? It has the EMI box but A2G is sometimes listed as a 1st UK press ?
Fecage
Despite that many say this is the best sounding pressing, I was somewhat unimpressed with my (A-1G/B-1G) version. In a head to head play test on the title track with my SMAS 382 Canadian 1st pressing, the Canadian sounds clearer, less muddied, and crisper throughout.
Ceroelyu
I wondered is the Canadian pressing the 1975 repress. That's the one your catalogue number matches. Thanks! Alastair
DEAD-SHOT
See my comment above about the 1994 remastered CD, and what I think of this album on vinyl.

I need some help, my version has the matrix SHVL 781 A-8-1-2 and SHVL 781 3-7-1-1. And is"signed" by the cutter "HTM". Any clues?
Dodo
Hi, it might be 1980's UK reissue. I have it too and just found out which version it is. Here's the link: http://www.discogs.com/Pink-Floyd-Atom-Heart-Mother/release/4718705
Hawk Flying
You can hear Pink Floyd are progressing but there are ideas emerging on this album that are realised much better on Dark Side, Wish You Were Here and Animals. I enjoy the symphonic sounds of Atom Heart Mother and Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast but the folky rock songs they are punctuated by aren't as strong. This is one to listen to after a long, strange night when the sun is coming up, you need to get this is you like Floyd.
Skyway
Totally agree with this assessment. This record is definitely a bridge to their later sound, It gets a bad rap.
Gaua
This was my first LP on vinyl I love this album it is a masterpiece
Umor
One of my favorite Floyd albums just for the sheer insanity of it. I initially hated it but it became a grower, this is one of those albums that could have only been made in 1970.
Thetalen
Apparently I initiated something of a debate with my comments about this album. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that even Roger Waters hates it. He said that he wouldn't perform it live even if offered a million pounds. Can you imagine if they had pursued the direction of the title track? The band would have croaked after making the next album. The first time I heard Atom Heart was a cassette copy I made in 1995 from my uncle's vinyl copy. After giving up on it, I gave the tape to a friend. Both of us were just getting into Floyd at the time, having started with (and loving) Dark Side, Wish, and the Wall. My friend hated this album as much as me, and I thought it was funny when he said that he didn't know what the hell side one was -- whether it was Floyd or not.I stand by my review: Atom Heart Mother is Pink Floyd's worst album. Nothing else even comes close.
Aver
What do you make of The Division Bell ??? imo it's much much worse !
Mildorah
This is how classical and psychedelic pop met in the seventies... Pure musical bliss full of blues influenced melodies and delirious choirs, with full orchestral effect. This has been a blast for the last 32 years, what else can I say?
Tori Texer
'Solid proof to me that tastes are different.'marc24 is right. For me it's one of their greatest, biggest Lps. A-side is just incredible: these stockhausen chorusses, these hardcore electronic sounds, these smart strings. It's from 1970 !! Some kind of opera.Who cares about the B-side :-? Even there you find some georgous tracks. Especially the 'Breakfast'.The gatefold is a legendary cover (no 'mad cow disease' at that time). What does 'numbingly baffling' mean?
Ranicengi
the b side is just as marvellous
Dark_Sun
To call side one a disaster is just mind numbingly baffling
LØV€ YØỮ
Couldn't disagree more!In fact it made me rate this album another 5/5, its my favorite of Pink Floyd, because of side 1.You seem well informed and I do not claim to be a music expert but to say this is their worst...What about any album after Dark Side on the Moon? Downhill from there as far as I am concerned.Solid proof to me that tastes are different.
I am hcv men
Hilarious rating: 4.31 / 5! This is an exceptionally poor album; Floyd's worst by a mile. The title-track is an unmitigated disaster. Thank god they didn't pursue this direction. The solo tracks on side two are "good" only when compared with the wretched mess on side one. Waters turns in his requisite depressing track with "If" and Wright's "Summer 68" is nothing short of ghastly. Gilmour oddly resurrected "Fat Old Sun" for his tour in 2006.In fact, the album's only enjoyable moment is the roadie making (and eating) breakfast on the last track. That and the fact that it's my favourite Floyd album cover. This is one to hang on the wall and keep away from the turntable.
