Zainn
The "Morgan Freeman" of the EBM scene, Jean-Luc deMeyer is known throughout the EBM scene for his distinct nice voice... and to stay with the cinematic parable, deMeyer has similarly over-exploited his vocal capacity to feature on some dubious releases of late. This is a quaint arty-farty project, where deMeyer recites from the works of Baudelaire, and I'm not sure it could be correctly labeled as EBM despite its connection to the legendary singer of Front 242? I would describe this as poetry on top of slow, melodic and heavy electronic soundscapes (hardly the extrovertly aggressive danceability of beat driven EBM). Now, I fully understand that deMeyer can't go about making the same songs over and over again, and cudos to him that he looks to a more artistic context and that he keeps trying to develop the electronic music and do something different. So that's not where my criticism is. Indeed, a couple of tracks are quite appealing in their beautiful arrangements and dramatic build-up (the opening track "Spleen" and "Le Jeu"), but in the end a difficult album to get one's head around, and rather than taking to it in the long run, I find myself a tad bit bored, to be honest.
