Definitely a classic for the genre, a fine example of mid 90's Hip-Hop, containing Mobb's most abiding tune "Shook Ones Pt. II". It's all pretty dark, with a more realistic, if not uplifting, message than many of their contemporaries, but not something that I can relate to or that I would chose to listen to nowadays. My highlight is actually "Give Up the Goods".

Though I will probably never listen to this album again, I just wanted to chime in and say that Shook Ones Pt. II still gets my vote for the grittiest, muddiest street life anthem ever.Not the most lyrically sophisticated, not the best produced, not the most complex one, not the tightest, and not the funkiest one. Not the thuggish ruggish to the bone tune y'all wanna play when you in the mood for upping' your street cred, given you had any in the first place. The grittiest. True grit on raw wax.This is pure grit right here. Granted, everyone has moved on ages ago and ventured into all sorts of stuff, but twenty years later and this is literary the soundtrack of night crawling assassins, with over sized raincoats, packing sawed-off shotguns under rainy, dimly lit street corners in Queensbridge... Or something like that. Like I would know. I'm from central Europe, yo!However, this track is a gravel pit of teeth clenching pain. The members of Mobb Deep, if I remember correctly, were hardly twenty years old when this was recorded. Given that fact, this is raw enough that I'd almost believe they actually live every syllable they spit. Way more often than not, most of these cats were day dreaming. Maybe these two lads were as well, I could care less, 'cause even if they were, impersonation in hip hop has hardly ever gotten better.Nas may have been more poetic. Jay-Z may have had the most expensive cigar. Onyx may have screamed a little louder. Big L (RIP and respect, though) may have bitten the bullet. Gnag Starr dropped all the knowledge. Jeru The Damaja threw darts at the fakers like no other. The "Wu" clan may have boasted unprecedented production vaults. Raeknow may have recorded that soundtrack to Scarface Giorgio Moroder never got around to recording. All of the above may be correct. It may as well be a bunch of turd. However, this remains as gritty as they come. True grit, I will say it again for you now:G.R.I.T.

IWAS

Of all the gritty SP-1200 laden early 90s NYC hiphop masterpiece albums (you know them, anything RZA touched, Nas, etc.) no production feels as fresh in my mind as The Infamous. I mean this album is unbelievably dark and dirty. Every sample seems buried under layers and layers of record hiss, rain and fog. It's so hardboiled, urban, deep and atmospheric, that I would doubt that modern dubstep producers like Burial and Vex'd aren't huge fans. Havoc & Prodigy's rhymes have a deadpan, stone cold but wavering delivery that carries the the straightforward beats along, but they never get old or samey. Being a sound art junky the moments that hit me the most on this album are the more noisy/ sound effect-like, in specific the sample of a humming streetlamp (yeah!) in "Party's Over." A kind of ambient sense not seen in many other (true, street, and un-pretentious) hiphop productions. The best part is that it feels (of course) real and not inserted for the sake of the experimentation of some bloody college students.
