A friend let me borrow this record back in the summer of 1985 after he caught them live opening for New Order on their Low-life tour. I was intrigued by the cover design and the fact that it was on Factory Records (home to New Order and Joy Division) so without even listening to the record I already had high hopes for it. “Smiling Monarchs” is one of those epic songs that takes a while to build up but once it does you’re along for the ride. Right away my brother and I went out and purchased a copy for our collection. We also found out that the record was produced and remixed by New Order’s Bernard Sumner. “Smiling Monarchs” at times reminds me of New Order’s “Your Silent Face”. I have placed this song on many mix tapes that I made for family and friends back in the 1980’s trying to spread the word about this record as it became one of those unknown gems amongst fellow DJs and 80’s music lovers. I would get positive responses about placing Abecedarians songs on their mix tapes. “Benway’s Carnival” on the b-side is also another great song that is much faster and became a personal favorite as at times I actually preferred it over “Smiling Monarchs”.

Very New Order sounding! I think Bernard Sumner had somethig to do with the production. Smiling Monarchs has a big beat with loud keyboards. I actually prefer the faster b-side "Benways Carnival". The material that appeared on Eureka & Resin doesn't like these 2 songs at all. If you like this release seek the 2x10" The Other Side of the Fence!

Typical of early Factory, This 12" uses sequenced keyboards for rythym and live drums & guitar. Although the singing is an aquired taste (but typical of the 80's), the electronic sounds produced on these tunes are awesome and stand up even against todays standards. I Have and will be sampling them again.
