Dre Day 'Extended Club Mix': Everything a P-Funk head needs. Andre clearly felt the funk & understood it inside out, & what he adds to the original samples must have had a firm nod of cosmic approval from the big man George C... Did it need to be 10 minutes long? Depends how stoned you are. But lets face it, 'Brain damage on the mic don't manage nothin'; Dre was straight as a nut when he finalised this, but he sure knew what the audiences mind state demanded & rinsed it for all its worth. Same with 'Let Me Ride', an excursion taking you beyond 'Mothership Connection' into new depths, beyond funk & beyond Hip-Hop.'Puffin' On Blunts And Drankin' Tanqueray' is sadly lost among the competition, not a bad track, but not quite a classic. Seemed to lack the hooks Dre delivered on the rest, despite holding up on its own as a decent dark & stark gang banger...'One Eight Seven' is a remix of the Epic/Solar release 'Deep Cover', from the movie of the same title, both brilliant, I'd cap the original as king, but non the less this adds weight to an already outstanding must have 12" from the vaults.

Back in '93/'94, a couple of singles by Dr. Dre ("Dre Day" & "Let Me Ride") and one by Snoop ("What's My Name?") had this weird version on the singles called the "Extended Club Mix". Now that title for someone who has listened to dance music isn't that uncommon, but in hiphop? Well yeah, I believe there was this phase in Dre's production that he was not just borrowing sounds from Parliament/Funkadelic, he was channeling them. They ran the track as usual and then tacked on more instrumentation, more vocals, more and heavier bass.Now to be honest it was quite indulgent but for the fan of g-funk, this is quite a treat a few years on. For all I care Dre could have gone in knee deep and done a 20minute version, I would have enjoyed it.Noted though is that b-side single "Puffin' On Blunts And Drankin' Tanqueray", while being 12 minutes is not 12minutes in reality. It's two parts and the first half is the vocal version and then the other half is the instrumental. Dre isn't present on the track much vocally and it's actually a Dre produced vehicle for Death Row artists Kurupt, Daz & Lady Of Rage. Good track either how with a nice laid back party atmosphere.
