Fonceiah

The first copy from Amazon had some pretty terrible distortion. There was also a crackly rough patch near the end of Only Skin, arguably the centerpiece of the album. This was disappointing, so I got Amazon to replace it. The second copy was exactly the same as the first, with distortion everywhere, and the exact same rough patch in the same place. I guess we can only hope for a remastered version, or at least a new batch of pressings. Maybe the stamp they were using had some dust on it, or it was simply worn out, but either way it sounds terrible. So sad, considering this is one of my favourite albums of all time. It's really a gem. 5/5 album, 2/5 pressing.

It appears there is a problem with the recent pressings. I ordered a copy from Amazon.com this month (August 2017). Every song has major distortion during some passages. The distortion was most prevalent on side B. This is one of my all-time favourite albums so this was very disappointing! Am keen to get a good copy that doesn't distort.

Thanks for that - I just ordered a copy from EU/Netherlands (my third attempt buying this lp) and it has no/minimal distortion. Very happy! The two copies I originally got from US sources (one from amazon.com and one directly from Drag City) both suffered from the same peaking distortion issue.

It may just be a problem with recent pressings attained in the US (I'm assuming that's where you're based seeing as you cited amazon.com). I recently got my copy (September 2017) from the UK HMV online store and there were no distortions whatsoever. Although, whats more likely is that it's an amazon problem, I've had experiences in the past with amazon and they're somewhat known for not storing their records efficiently (with many of them arriving warped/somewhat distorted). This won't apply for private sellers obviously. So I don't believe this is a pressing problem, more a seller problem.
