Akinozuru
This album is my go to answer whenever questioned about a hidden gems in my collection. The most criminally over-looked album. Perfect ingredients of beautifully written songs, haunting and emotional vocals and an understated production. I like to call this Demo-soul. The album was famously recorded in their flat and "sounds like a demo". Having never heard a demo myself, I wonder why more people don't do it? I conveys an intimacy that you'd associate with a jazz album with judicious use of synthesizers and guitar effect peddles to create an atmosphere that's warm, hazy that's almost Californian. The themes cover things like ostracism after a messy break-up, relationship uncertainty associated with youth and all sorts of angsty type situations that's a magnet for students. But closer analysis of the lyrics indicate a much more mature head at the pen, exposing things like self-alienation as indulgent attention seeking and perennial subjects like commitment phobia and "feeling alone in a crowd". So far so "emo" but the pacing of the songs and the plaintive vocals make the songs gentle and positive and ulitimately up-lifting. Bliss.

I could not agree more! Bought it when it came out and it has hardly left my CD player since.
