First off, cant believe this album is 30 years old this summer. When this was first released i almost wore my copy out. Some other reviewers seem obsessed with the use of the fairlight CMI. "too much Fairlight"..is like saying status quo use too much guitar. As his other releases were quite lo-fi in terms of equipment (still wonderful releases) i suspect with him signing to arista, give him the great advantage of the latest gear, which at the time was the fairlight (which is after all a just a sampler, all be it a very expensive one). Even in his earlier work , the main thing to sound out was his quirky use of catchy melodies and those almost jazzy solos. with scale of ten leer perfected his sound with clever arrangements and glossy production to make this one of the stand out albums of 80's pop electronica. Just a shame arista never re-released all the tracks on the 12" that accompanied this album. If you like electronic music then definitely give this album a listen and i suggest a few listening before it reveals its magic.

On the flipside of the review submitted below, I am a fan of glossy and pop synth music. While I have some appreciation for Leer's earlier experimental work, this is the album I love. The Fairlight is all over this album, and I'm first to admit it's almost too much Fairlight - but given his intentions and the popularity of the instrument at the time... Anyway, this album does indeed have wonderful Synth pop moments. If you're look for synth gloss here it is. It's shiny, it's 80's, it's attempting a go at commercial success. I also appreciate his work with Act; though certainly less a commercial grab, the pop intent is there. His prior 'industrial' leanings work well in the context of lines like "cold steel town" and 'International' is a great pop song about the heroin trade. Still subversive while retaining that gloss.

I understand why other fans of Leer's earlier work may not like this, and for the longest time I wasn't as impressed as I was with the Cherry Red/Oblique/Industrial releases, but I have to say I've come to love this. As mentioned, this is Leer with a Fairlight trying to make something as glossy and pop as possible. He wasn't alone, like Heaven 17, the Human League and others who followed ABC's path from underground new wave to the top of the charts, Leer really believed he could subvert from the inside. It didn't work, but this is a beautiful 80s pop record with extremely subtle charms.
Ricep
I was a little disappointed by this LP. "Contradictions" was raw NewWave-City-Soul, and here he uses a CMI Fairlight to do 'real' songs which became a little sterile. nevertheless there are 3 or 4 good songs on it ("International", "Mistrust")
