Water

Joshua Ryan's album BY DESIGN starts off with an ambient intro, but don't be fooled: by "Buildings Inbetween" the beats have kicked in, all mellow-house-like with the Luke Fair mix, while Trap Kit raise some mid-tempo breaks. There's a hint of acid with his collaboration with Brian Dietrich on "Kuro," and "Damage" pushes the progressive trance tempo up even further. The latter half of the album flows smoothly from one track tot he next, particularly as Ryan's mix of Paul Grogan's "Distrakted" heads in a more aggressive direction despite the dreamy vocals, only to have James Holden's mix of "Pistolwhip" bring that dreaminess back to the forefront. Ryan brings some peppy joy into "Fury," while the midpoint of "Yield" goes crazy with the percussion. His collaboration with his brother on "Blazer" adds in some twinkling funk to help the album out. Certainly pleasant, if not anything particularly noteworthy.
