Karon
When Nordvargr, Master of dark ambient music, meets Merzbow, the Godfather of Noise, their sonic symbiosis expectedly makes music come alive, producing alternating moments of mystery and terror. "Tardyon Storm" vividly depict particles collecting in volume as they chug along, and then accelerating in intensity. 15 minutes in, ghostly portals begin rattling, slamming shut, leading to a gratifying climax that promises to grip, shock, jolt and ultimately release the listener. "Kyoufu-O" (literally translated from Japanese as Terror-O) is a lot harsher and difficult to listen to. Electronic thuds, maniacal screeches and terrifying alarms slice across not just a sonic factory, but the expanse of a poisoned, blood-red sky. "Tachyon Paradox" subtly combines the mysterious soundscapes of "Tardyon Storm" and the portentous alarms of "Kyoufu-O" to form a deeply unsettling (if not altogether disturbing) track. This intelligent EP is a prime example of how electronica can become so organic, alive, and frighteningly vivid in the hands of true masters of the genre. Be warned.
