i saw a live performance in nov. '11 in which the chipmunk vocals were replaced by a live female vocalist. i think i preferred the live renditions to the recording. it was 'wonder-ful'.

The modification you mention seems to turn the respective tracks corny in some way, which is unfortunate. I believe that the intention was to make it more emotional. Perhaps a lighter modification, which gives more room to the unaltered voice, or a modification turning the voice deeper would have been preferable.
