Bluecliff
What a refreshing surprise! I was expecting maybe more of the same sometimes humdrum 2000's TD. What I got instead was a solid album with some real emotion and some stellar tracks. The overall style feels like the other Jerome-heavy Dream Mixes series, but there's more than that here. Perhaps Jerome, having complete freedom, a green field, allowed for more of his creativity to shine through. For instance, we get a bit more guitar than we're used to seeing.I mainly write this to highlight and complement Friendship 7 and At Marianas Trench. Friendship 7 around 4:15 morphs into this brilliant modern TD rock-ish piece with a superb guitar wailing in at 5:05. Is that Jerome on the (real) drums? The great energy and production on this gives me goosebumps like the best of 220 Volt Live. Best track on the album. At Marianas Trench is a stunning airy, ambient foray into the depths. This song belongs on a movie soundtrack somewhere, as it's as good as my faves like the best from Risky Business or Firestarter. Everything is on high reverb here. A simple acoustic guitar (faked on a synth?) provides the sequence. Soft synth tones provide a melody. I could listen to this all day.The rest of the record doesn't reach those heights, but it's all worthwhile, and there's no clinkers at all. The album was well put together, and ebbs and flows in energy levels and genre slants. A real fun album that got me to listen to it 8 times straight before allowing me to move on. That hasn't happened since Purgatorio. Well done Jerome!
