From the pressrelease in November 1995. I first met Alien in his jam-packed homestudio in 1989. In those days this DJ/producer was part of Time Drillers. A Rotterdam hiphop crew who were far ahead of their time - not in the last place thanks to Alien’s experimental arrangements. Every square inch of his studio was taken in by turntables, samplers, keyboards and taperecorders. From the speakers came fierce hiphop beats and menacing spacesounds. Alien was busy with his massive audio-offensive ; Plan A. As a producer he has always been tempted to go beyond conventional boundaries. Innovations from people like Chemical Brothers or Wu Tang producer RZA came pounding from his speakers six years ago. When Time Drillers split up in 1992, Alien disappeared from view for some time. Two years later he returned with a new crew called Clan Stronghold. Every month they produced a tape and distributed their material through the better Dutch skate and hiphop stores. The arrival of triphop and jungle opened new perspectives for the kind of experimental hiphop Alien has been making for the last decade. Despite it’s success he disbanded Clan Stronghold in order to move on with a soundsystem called City Crusher and some recording sessions as a solo-artist. His soloproject has been signed by Fusebox. A new label that works with inspired minds from both house and hiphop. Their second release will be DJ Alien’s ep In Your Space. A thrilling voyage that travels the far corners of Alien’s mind ; along the upbeat Get Down to the mesmerising Smokin’ and the slightly philosophic Blood & Bones. Who needs drugs....?
