"Renk - Keeping Jungle Alive!" :DOh, sorry - it's not 1994 any more, so they were keeping Garage alive in 1997. Not that it needed "keeping alive" (come to think of it, Jungle didn't need any help back in '94, either) as this sound was not only all over the pirates, but used to pump out of what seemed like every shop, takeaway, car (including my battered Fiesta, lol) and even the occasional... er... garage ;) dahn West London. The days when even mainstream stores like HMV in Ealing had racks full of the most upfront white label Garage. The days when the boydem used to stop me for playing this stuff too loudly, with the windows open, while driving along Acton High Street, haha :)Unlike many of the other Speed Garage/UK Garage compilations and mixes of the late 1990s, this contains hardly any tracks which went anywhere near the Top 40, and is all the better for it, as it retains that "pirate radio" vibe of all those wonderful and now mostly long-gone stations. Not a single bad track, an absolute joy from beginning to end, and takes me back to what were much happier times than now. And it goes for pennies on Ebay - why?? I suppose it's probably not quite as well-known as some of the other, better marketed compilations, but a lot of those have too many chart hits on and not enough of them retain the underground feeling of the pirate sets. I haven't played much Garage for a while, but I've given this a spin today (as well as a couple of Mark "Ruff" Ryder's mixes) and it's been bassline (no, not the "Niche" crap ;) ) heaven all day.If you want a UK Garage mix which takes you back to the days before all the gun crime ruined the scene, this one should be near the top of your list.
