This is one of my top 2008 vinyl purchases. I mean, check out the guys involved - all heroes of english techno sound, and they unite to bring four menacing and nasty tracks to the table. Mark Broom starts on the lighter side of things with Blue, a pretty simple and straight forward tune with a playful melody kicking in shortly after the track's intro. Easy going and floating, mixes well with almost anything. Sounds like a more developed and daring take on standard modern minimal material. Very good! Paul Mac brings the gravy with Hybrid Things and freezes hell down to the last inch. Not fast and doesn't reside in some obsolete BPM ranges, but this is rotten, disgusting and terror inducing to the bone. A fat and remorseless acid riff is unleashed over equally punishing percussion for well over five minutes. Insane, but above all, damn addicitve and neck snapping. I need more, damn it! Tony Anderson's number is heavy on the acid as well, but has a funkier approach, meaning the 303 is nicely merged with some DJ friendly percussion, but it maintains a more mature sound than most other modern club friendly tracks. The drive of the track is of the type that just kind of invites you to joyously bounce all over the dance floor. Cool track! Ben Sims closes this release with Jack Up, a hard techno blazer with a surprisingly smooth female vocal at the beginning. Only for a brief while though, as one minute into the track an acid lead is introduced and soon is shoulder to shoulder with the vocal, which is again brought back to life, so to speak. Sure it all sounds very nice and neatly arranged, but it gets repetitive after a while, with the same synth and vocal taking turns over and over again. My guess is that Jack Up does wonders in clubs, but doesn't really pass my home listening test. Not bad, just too long to keep me interested throughout. Overall, the first two tracks are where your focus should be, and they are worth the purchase. The Paul Mac track is a strong contender for my top 10 of 2008 list.
