Their HM days were up to Empire only, these last releases (anything without Tate don't count in my world since he is the Q sound) are in the line of a heavier U2Gin and Tonic needs both G & T which in this case means Geoff Tate which I always since the first EP considered metals #1 singerHoping for a reunion also with DeGarmo since he was the one behind the best songs with GT which one of the good songs on Dedicated to Chaos might describe "Big Noize"the last song on that album and the hitherto last Q song, a band with an original lineup surviving for many years... Well all - DeGarmo, might again be + DeGarmo&Tate once more

I’ve long been a fan of the progressive metal band Queensrÿche, despite the pretentions umlaut in their name. (It’s a heavy metal thing…) My good friend Archie turned me on to them in the 90’s. (Music: The best gift one friend can give another.) I haven’t, however, followed them much since 1997’s Hear In The Now Frontier. I was eager to listen to this, their 2013 eponymous release, Queensrÿche. And on vinyl no less! The sticker on the front cover reads “A RETURN TO FORM”. If they are “returning to form”, had they somehow lost their way musically during the time I had ignored them? Was my lack of support in some way their undoing? If so, I am willing to once again become an avid fan, to support their music and spread their awesome metal message.Their 1988 album Operation: Mindcrime, is considered to be one of the greatest heavy metal concept albums of all time. I consider it to be one of the best concept albums of all time (any genre) period. And I love concept albums. (Remember when people used to listen to ENTIRE albums?) So I had high expectations for this album.Within the first few notes of the second track, “Where Dreams Go To Die” (the first track just being an intro), I was reassured that if Queensrÿche had lost their way, they had now definitely found their way back. They sounded incredibly good on vinyl. The bass response was solid, deep and imposing—the way that only vinyl can sound.Evidently there had been some “unrest” in the band (or should I say civil war?), a law suit ensued and eventually personnel changes. The new lead vocalist, Todd La Torre’s, vocals were soaring, clear and anthemic. The musical transition from Geoff Tate’s vocals seemed to have been as seamless as one could hope—it hadn’t changed the overall sound of the band. Scott Rockenfield’s drumming was as crisp and ballistic as ever. All-in-all the entire band sounded incredibly tight, very together. This degree of strife can often break up a band—I’m glad it didn’t. They seemed to have come out of it all the stronger.I had forgotten how much I really loved Queensrÿche—I haven’t listened to them in quite a long time. I am also very pleased that they have supported vinyl fans with a unique, very well produced and mastered product. It’s so good when things are done right. (makes me all happy inside) As a special gift to vinyl fans the LP contains two extra live tracks (Queen Of The Reich & En Force) that are not on the CD.The album came in a beautiful and darkly sinister gatefold jacket emblazoned with their signature logo included a CD of the album and a 180g LP pressed in a very cool silver swirl vinyl. The inside of the jacket has pictures of the five band members and the lyrics to all the songs. The record had signal strength of about average (-6.0 dB) and was dead whisper quiet with virtually no surface noise, clicks or pops whatsoever. The recording had little or no dynamic range compression (average score of +0.3 as measured by DRC-Meter). In comparison my processed version had a score of +2.0 and the included CD was aggressively compressed, with an average score of +6.4! This is the highest score I have ever measured with DRC-Meter.I thoroughly enjoyed this album with head-banging abandon and give it 5 big stars out of 5!

This album release on June 25, 2013 for the "official Queensryche, without Geoff Tate" is excellent. In its first week it has sold 13,500 copies and is charted at #23. The music is fresh and still holds the same quality that we come to expect from a great band with its original foundation but with a high quality upgrade at the front man position in Todd LaTorre and with newer addition Parker Lundgren. Great album!
