Hulore
Highly recommended pair of unmixed compilations from undisputed tastemakers Gilles Peterson ("classic" jazz on Disc 1) and Jazzanova ("nujazz" on Disc 2) that showcase the roots of jazz influence on modern electronic and dance music (Art Blakey's "Anthenagin", track 1-10, is as astonishing as it is obscure). None of the selections are obvious (the tendency for tastemaking labels like BBE is consciously to dig deeper into record crates) but, individually and collectively, the tracks comprise an eminently accessible collection of rare gems that are nevertheless delightfully representative of their respective genres. What is astonishing is how similar the two discs sound: perhaps not a coincidence, but some variety would have elevated the listening experience. My other criticism is that Peterson's selections ignore everything before the cool jazz movement of the 1950's. While it may be harder to play "connect the dots to modern music" with Louis Armstrong, Teddy Wilson, and Charlie Parker, these artists, together with Miles Davis, are clearly members of the jazz royalty whose influence on the electronica/dance ecosystem cannot be discounted. And those who are familiar with Wagram's Saint-Germain-Des–Prés Café series of "electro-jazz" compilations will no doubt get a sense of déja vu on Disc 2, but this one is arguably more "exclusive".
