allegro
Arguably my favorite reduction 12". Terrence Dixon continues is again behind the wheel on this journey to inimitable techno minimalism, via three unmissable masterclasses in groove control and alien funk. The "A" side track is unstoppable. It all revolves around a woozy, high pitched synth pattern, barely shifting in intensity or volume, underpinned by sharp percussion. Eight minutes of it all is what you have! I know many turn their heads in disbelief, but you have to know what you're getting when purchasing a 'reduction' vinyl: reduced minimal techno. If anyone does, and I sure don't, mind the linear and persistent structure of this track, you should probably stay clear from this label. Thing is, it's damn infectious! Either you bite the hook on the double, or you miss the train to extraterrestrial musical bliss, loaded with psychedelic ohrwurms, something Dixon effortlessly excels at. Don't listen waiting for something to happen, expecting a full blown climax. Sit back and let the sound itself be the climax! It's immediate, rugged and mind bending in its intense drive and subtle changes that only reveal themselves by applying the random needle drop method. The shrill-gorged theme adds to the overall nightmarish atmosphere. The B side continues in a similar manner, yet both tracks shun prominent elements like the ill lead on the other side of this record. The daily menu offers tight cymbals, claps and various, carefully placed shakers to keep the minimal bit groovy, puzzle the listener some more as if they weren't baffled already in one way or the other. Occasional melodic bits and sound passages are introduced to break up the otherwise tight manner in which the music here advances. However, what really struck me about these tracks, is how much each of them sounds to its respective, let's call it that, counterpart or original source on Badge Of Honor, T. Dixon's 2013 album on Surface Records. For example, A1 reminds me of A3 (Incoming) on that album, which also spins out of control with its whistling theme. Then, the B1 tune lifts certain elements completely off the D1 (The Atlantic) number on the Surface release. The bass line and the melodic snippets are basically identical, it's just that the 'reduction' vinyl applies a heavier drum pattern. Then, B2 borrows an array of supplementary effects and sounds from "View From A Lighthouse" (D3 on Badge Of Honor), yet it retains a more condensed and scaled down aesthetic.I don't know, I'd really like somebody's else's thoughts or input on this. Since (by accident) I listened to both of these during the same day, I constantly had the feeling I had just heard certain parts moments ago! It's like the took the finest ingredients from those tracks and spiced them up, beefed them up for the dance floor and decided to release them on his label. Not to stir things up and head in a negative direction, nobody's talking about cheap rip offs here, it's just that it pleasantly surprised me how Terrence Dixon shifts so much with so little variation and scarce ingredients. He may not use a lot, but rest assured he squeezers the maximum out of every layer applied. The similarities might be there, maybe not, but it's an amazing experience to listen to his releases chronologically as they are released. With the constant minimalism note throughout, it's awesome how each release builds upon the previous one, yet they all stubbornly follow a common thread. Speaking of dedication and belief...As with approximately 90% of his work, it won't suit everybody, but give it multiple chances and you will be rewarded - guaranteed. Terrence Dixon is in a universe of his own, and sometimes he seems to be its sole inhabitant. Whether you will enjoy the environment of the universe his music takes you to is completely up to you, but the fact is, there is nobody that interprets Detroit techno like he does. Highly unique, highly artistic,
